We spoke with recent international graduate, Devashish Sharma, MSc Business Analytics, about his experience at the University of Bristol Business School and securing a job at Deloitte after his master’s.
Why did you choose to study at Bristol for your master’s degree?
As someone passionate about using data to solve complex business problems, I was looking for a programme that combined theoretical depth with practical application. The MSc in Business Analytics offered precisely that, cutting-edge coursework, real-world projects, and a diverse student body. Moreover, Bristol’s status as a leading research institution assured me that I would be learning from some of the best minds in the field.
What did you enjoy most about studying your programme, and what key skills do you feel you have taken away from it?
What I valued most about the course was its strong connection to real-world industry challenges. We engaged in hands-on projects such as performance benchmarking for financial institutions and social media sentiment analysis, which allowed us to apply tools like Python, Power BI and SQL in meaningful, practical contexts. Beyond developing technical expertise, the course helped me build a structured approach to problem-solving, enhance my ability to communicate data-driven insights clearly and tailor my storytelling effectively to diverse stakeholders
What is your next step after graduation?
After completing my master’s, I joined Deloitte South Asia LLP as a Data Analytics Consultant in the Data Engineering and AI domain. In this role, I develop scalable data solutions, lead analytics initiatives, and deliver insights that support strategic decision-making for global clients. It has been a fulfilling transition that allows me to apply both the technical knowledge and strategic mindset I cultivated during my time at Bristol.
How did the University help prepare you for that next step?
The University of Bristol played a pivotal role in preparing me for the consulting world. The course structure emphasised independent learning, critical thinking, and practical application, all of which are core to my current role. The guidance from faculty, particularly from Professor Marios and his team, fostered a problem-solving mindset and gave me the confidence to handle complex analytical projects. Furthermore, the University’s focus on professional development, through initiatives such as the Bristol Plus Award, enabled me to build essential leadership and employability skills.
What is your end goal or dream job?
My long-term goal is to take on strategic leadership roles where I can harness the power of data and technology to drive meaningful, large-scale impact. I am passionate about using data to solve complex, real-world challenges that affect both businesses and communities. I aspire to lead innovation and transformation through data-driven strategies that create lasting value and positive change.
Do you have any advice you would give a first-year student?
Make the most of the opportunities that come your way. Be proactive, engage with your peers, explore beyond the curriculum, and seek out experiences that challenge you. The first year is the perfect time to build a strong foundation, both academically and personally. Also, do not be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Some of the most valuable learnings come from the most unexpected experiences.
My time at the Business School was truly transformative. What stands out most is the journey, the learning, the friendships, the collaboration, and the continuous push to grow and improve. The school created an environment that was both intellectually stimulating and personally rewarding.
I leave Bristol not just with a degree, but with greater clarity, confidence, and a strong foundation to move forward with purpose.
