Hear from our Scholars

Thuy Trang Hoang – MSc Financial Technology

Why did you choose the University of Bristol Business School?

“The reason I chose the MSc Financial Technology programme at University of Bristol Business School was because the modules aligned perfectly with my expectations. It covers topics like Machine Learning, AI, and Algorithmic Trading. Through the modules ‘Quantitative Methods, Big Data, and Machine Learning’ and ‘AI, Blockchain Technology and Applications’, I’ve gained a deep understanding of how an ML model works, as well as how to build one using Python, which will allow me to create my own model for the robo-advisor.

Additionally, by studying the ‘Algorithmic Trading’ module in my second semester, I will learn how to code a trading strategy and evaluate its performance. This will provide the foundation for me to build a robo-advisor that can suggest different trading strategies for various customers in each market period.”

What makes studying at University of Bristol so special?

“There are multiple reasons why the University of Bristol is so special compared to other universities:

  • Firstly, I get to study all the subjects I enjoy in mandatory units, rather than just optional ones. At other universities, I would have to skip some modules that I really like, such as Algorithmic Trading.
  • Additionally, when choosing Bristol, I knew the programme would be a tough challenge because I would have to learn Quantitative Finance and Machine Learning in the first semester. At other universities, it would have been easier since I could study these topics in the second semester. However, I really wanted to challenge myself and see how I could overcome it!

Honestly, I’m still trying to find my way through this challenge, but I don’t regret my choice at all.”

What are your career ambitions after you graduate?

“My career ambition after graduation is to develop more financial products to assist individual investors trading on Vietnam’s stock market. In the longer term, I aim to apply Machine Learning and AI to build a robo-advisor that can provide personalised trading advice to each customer based on their risk tolerance, financial goals, and other factors. This robo-advisor would also be capable of self-regulating in response to market conditions.”

What makes studying at Bristol so special?

“Studying at Bristol is special for several reasons. The academic resources are outstanding, with a rich library system, extensive research opportunities, and state-of-the-art facilities that truly enhance the learning experience. The combination of interactive seminars and lectures has been incredibly helpful in deepening my understanding of complex topics and encouraging critical thinking. “After I graduate, my ambition is to contribute to the revival of Sudan in the aftermath of the war. I aim to collaborate with NGOs and Sudanese Civil Societies that have faced significant hardship and adversity. Additionally, I plan to assist Sudanese businesses and industries in getting back on their feet by leveraging the knowledge and skills gained from my time at the University of Bristol’s Business School. My focus will be on implementing sustainable growth strategies that foster long-term economic recovery and stability.”
