At the University of Bristol Business School, the research we do tackles the big global issues impacting the economy and society. 2022 has been an exciting year for us and has included some outstanding activity across the school. Here is just a few of our 2022 highlights:
Dr Vanessa Beck awarded £975k ESRC Grant
Dr Vanessa Beck, Associate Professor in Work and Organisation at the University of Bristol Business School has been awarded a grant of £975k from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to study underemployment and the lived experience of underemployed workers.
Research funding secured by Giovanna Michelon and her team on the impact and financial materiality assessments in corporate sustainability
Members of the Accountability Sustainability and Governance (ASG) Research Group were successful in securing funding to work on a project on “Impact and financial materiality assessments in corporate sustainability and financial reporting: interconnections, practices, processes, and challenges”.
The research project aims to understand conceptually how the two traditionally distinct reporting arenas of sustainability and financial reporting are increasingly becoming connected and overlapping and to explore empirically the connections between the two.
Are tech companies ‘algorithmically amplifying’ insecurity in the gig economy?
Research published by University of Bristol Business School and Oxford University academics revealed how hundreds of thousands of gig workers regularly experience ‘reputational insecurity’. The study published in Sociology, showed that gig workers not only have to contend with the cost-of-living crisis and the ongoing pandemic but are also left feeling frustrated and hopeless by the algorithms used by tech companies. The research was reported widely in the national press, including the BBC and the Independent.
Professor Palie Smart awarded BAM Fellowship for Outstanding Contribution to Business and Management Scholarship
We were delighted to announce that Professor Palie Smart of the University of Bristol Business School was conferred the British Academy of Management (BAM) Fellowship.
The British Academy of Management is the UK’s leading authority on the academic field of management. To be nominated as a fellow, candidates must demonstrate a substantial and internationally recognised original contribution to the field of management.
Professor Evarist Stoja’s research featured in the national press
Professor Evarist Stoja, Professor of Finance at the University of Bristol Business School, has been researching the effect of financial turbulence on the economy and the actions the Bank of England have developed to combat it.
During a time of instability in 2022, Professor Stoja’s was featured in the national press to comment on the economy, including in the New Statesman and the Express.
Pioneering research shows the effects of gambling advertising on children
University of Bristol Business School academics, Professor Agnes Nairn and Dr Raffaello Rossi, have been researching the emotional effects of gambling advertising on children. Their research is influencing policy-makers to change the outdated regulations around gambling advertising to children on social media.
New research highlights worker exploitation in manufacturing
Dr Rutvica Andrijasevic, along with other academics at the University of Bristol, has conducted research which uncovers the exploitation of migrant worker rights and the effect of manufacturing.
The research has become impactful via collaboration with NGOs, Trade Unions and large independent monitoring association that led to audits within the factories, with an aim to improve working conditions and assist migrant workers.
‘The Threat: How Digital Capitalism is Sexist – And How to Resist’
We were delighted to announce the publication of ‘The Threat: How Digital Capitalism is Sexist – And How to Resist’ by Dr Lilia Giugni, Lecturer in Social Innovation and Strategy. The book explores the tight embrace between patriarchy and digital capitalism, and what we should do to resist.
Institute of Data and Marketing (IDM) Derek Holder Dissertation Award winner
The University of Bristol Business School were delighted that BSc Marketing alumna Jemma Dunphy was the recipient of the IDM’s Derek Holder Dissertation Award 2022 for her research on the effect of sexualised social media advertisements on consumer behaviour, specifically the perceived product attractiveness, attitudes towards the brand, and purchase intention.
New report launched on the impact of COVID-19 on Air Navigation Service Providers
An international research team including Professor Peter Turnbull from University of Bristol Business School have spent the past two years researching the impact of COVID-19 on Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs).
There have long been concerns about the commercialisation of ANSPs and the user pays system that funds ongoing operations, future investment in equipment and the training of staff. As the report demonstrates, the COVID-19 pandemic exposed structural flaws in the commercialised provision of ANS in the most devastating way imaginable.
