The University of Bristol Business School is delighted to announce the publication of ‘The Threat: How Digital Capitalism is Sexist – And How to Resist’ by Dr Lilia Giugni, Lecturer in Social Innovation and Strategy.

The book explores the tight embrace between patriarchy and digital capitalism, and what we should do to resist. Dr Vanessa Beck awarded £975k ESRC Grant

Two people passing a CV over on a clipboardDr Vanessa Beck of the University of Bristol Business School has been awarded a grant of £975k from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to study underemployment and the lived experience of underemployed workers. The project is a collaboration with Prof Tracey Warren and Dr Luis Torres-Retamal from the University of Nottingham, Dr Daiga Kamērade, University of Salford, and Dr Vanesa Fuertes, University of the West of Scotland and will start in January 2023.

The team will be working with Bristol One City, Citizens UK in Nottingham, The Poverty Alliance in Glasgow, and Salford City Council. The research aims to build positive relationships with these organisations and the wider community.

Does the financial media play a monitoring role around corporate disclosures?

Mobile phone with graphs and glasses on data sheetManagers issue press releases to communicate information about their firms to investors and other market participants. They often choose to complement disclosures of quantitative performance with qualitative information; in fact, the use of optimistic or pessimistic language throughout financial disclosures can be a tool for managers to either improve investors’ perceptions of firm fundamentals or misinform them.

The financial media closely follows firms’ disclosures and could play an important role as an information intermediary by broadly disseminating the critical points of the news releases, packaging information together from multiple sources, and producing new information.

Are CSR firms good tax citizens?

Trees overhead with text CSR (corporate social responsibility) Many public firms highlight their Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) credentials in corporate communication with investors, analysts and the general public. Sceptics have argued that CSR firms often use Greenwashing strategies whereby their real actions and strategies are not entirely compatible with the “advertised” CSR credentials.

One question that is often raised in this context is whether CSR firms are also good taxpayers, as may be expected of CSR firms. But, perhaps they attempt to deflect attention to less benevolent activities, such as avoiding taxes. In particular, tax authorities may perceive CSR firms as good taxpayers and scrutinise less CSR firms.

BAFA SWAG 2022 Doctoral Colloquium and Annual Conference

The 9th was the SWAG Annual Conference, preceded by a Doctoral Colloquium on the 8th.

Research funding secured by Giovanna Michelon and her team on the impact and financial materiality assessments in corporate sustainability

Members of the Accountability Sustainability and Governance (ASG) Research Group were successful in responding to a call for research promoted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) on “Materiality – Financial Statements and Beyond”. Xi Chen, Stuart Cooper, Ziyi Guo, Tim Kasim and Giovanna Michelon were able to secure funding to work on a project on “Impact and financial materiality assessments in corporate sustainability and financial reporting: interconnections, practices, processes, and challenges”.

Digital marketing trends 2022
